Preparing Your Car for Winter

*MEDIUM*

If you live in a cold climate, your car should be prepared for winter weather. The following systems should be checked for proper operation:

  1. Steering, suspension, and braking -- vehicle control is very important in slippery conditions. Make sure your tires, shock absorbers, steering linkage and brakes are in good condition.
  2. Fuel -- clean any dirt from the carburetor or fuel injector orifices by using a fuel additive. Lubricate your carburetor choke mechanism (if applicable).
  3. Emissions -- make sure your PCV valve is operational.
  4. Ignition -- Make sure your spark plugs, spark plug wires, and distributor are in good condition.
  5. Electrical -- Verify your battery has sufficient cranking power. Be certain cable connections are not loose or corroded. Make sure the alternator is working properly. Many electrical components like heater motor, defoggers, wipers, and headlights are extensively operated in winter.
  6. Lubrication -- Get a new oil change of correct viscosity so engine will start easily and fresh additives will control formation of oil contaminants.
  7. Heating -- make sure the heater/defroster and wiper blades work properly.
  8. Body -- touch up all paint chips and wax the paint to protect it from salts.
